ON THE RADIO: Vanishing Twitterers

There has been a lot of talk of late about fake and phony Twitter Followers and Facebook Fans.  Twitter has gotten the bulk of the criticism simply because their platform is wide open to exploitation of such an activity.

As this problem seemed to grow, some folks decided to look deeper and what they found out shocked a number of people, including advertisers, businesses and even many fans and followers of some well known “celebrities”.

What we found out is that the number of “bots” or fake accounts is far greater than what was originally thought.  And the manipulation is also real.  In some cases, half of a celebrity’s followers are fake.  They were bought, paid for.

Others have noticed that their follower numbers have taken a huge hit.  The reason for this?  A number of fake or bot accounts being dropped by their creator or Twitter finally catching up and deleting these accounts.

Over the past few weeks, it is thought that an estimated 1 million fake accounts have been identified and deleted on Twitter alone.
