ON THE RADIO: Iceland Bans All Plastic

Iceland foods, not the island nation is moving to ban all plastic from their branded packaging within the next five years.

Many folks will agree that often times, manufacturers over package their products and often that over packaging means the products or parts of the whole product are covered in layers of plastic.

This UK grocery chain thinks it can put pressure on world grocers to drop plastic.  The dirty little secret is that sometimes its good to use plastic and sometimes its more energy efficient to use plastic.

Instead what is going on here is a company trying to capitulate to the leftist who hate progress and petroleum which is what most plastics are made from.

What you will find is that some products are more sanitary when protected in plastic and its not over packaging.

It is also true that sometimes it is more efficient and more energy efficient to use plastic over say paper.  Its cheaper to produce and transport plastic bags vs paper bags.  Plastic bags can be recycled and reused like paper bags but paper bags weigh more than their plastic counter parts.

Same can be said for a lot of the packaging out there.  Plastic is lighter and takes up less space and is cheaper to transport than other kinds of packaging especially paper based packaging.  But it a bonus in the corner of enviro-whackos when you decide to dump plastic even if its the risk of decreasing sanitation and an increase in transportation cost and energy.
